Gamescom: 2014: PS4 System Software 2.0 detailed, 60 min. Share Play

One of the features Sony originally announced for the PS4 during its initial reveal 2013 February was the ability to let a friend take control of your game. Since the PS4′s launch, the feature was missing in action with Sony tight-lipped about its whereabouts. Well today, they announced that the feature, called Share Play, will be making its way to the console in System Software update 2.0.

PS4 System Software 2.0 will bring a lot of new features to the PS4, the highlight of which is Share Play. Exclusive to PlayStation Plus members, Share Play lets you pass the controller to an online friend, effectively bridging the gap between the single player and multiplayer experience.

Additionally, system software update 2.0 will bring YouTube to the PlayStation 4, giving players the ability to broadcast and upload gameplay straight to their YouTube accounts.

Finally, this new update will revamp the “What’s New” section of the PS4, enabling real-time updates so you always know what your friends are up to. Another thing to be added in this firmware is real name search function.

PS4 system software 2.0 will be available to download to the PS4 this fall.
An interview with Sony’s Jim Ryan also revealed additional details about SharePlay, highlighting a time limit attached to the feature:

There is a limit, however: you can only share your game for 60 minutes.
This time limit is most likely to prevent users from passing the game to a friend and allowing them to play the full title for free. We’re not sure if this limit is per game or per session which would theoretically allow you to start a new session with that same friend after the first is over.
