MOVIE NEWS – Director David Ayer spoke derogatorily of Marvel Entertainment on stage at the New York premiere of Warner Bros.’ latest DC Comics adaptation, Suicide Squad then he made an apologetic post later on Twitter.
Apparently, as Ayer introduced the movie at the premiere event last night, than one person in the audience shouted “Fuck Marvel!” After just a moment of silence, as can been seen in the cell phone footage below, Ayer repeated the phrase from the stage.
In October, Ayer, who co-wrote the screenplay for The Fast and the Furious, spoke generally to Empire Magazine about how Suicide Squad compares to the rest of the superhero movie landscape, which Marvel Entertainment dominates.
“You know, all these movies are about defeating the evil alien robot from fucking Planet X, before it destroys the world with its ticking clock. And who the fuck cares? But you do a story about struggle and isolation and people who have been shit on, that suddenly get thrown this lifeline… that’s not so bad. I like to think of this as Comic-Book Movie 2.0.”
Sometime later, after the premiere, Ayer addressed his statement in a tweeted apology.
Sorry about getting caught up in the moment and saying f*ck Marvel. Someone said it. I echoed. Not cool. Respect for my brother filmmakers.
