Another game follows the footsteps of PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds.
Hi-Rez announced Paladins: Battlegrounds. This is not a joke, that’s how the game mode is called in this free-to-play PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One game! The twist here is that the battle royale mode will be team-based (which means we will likely not see any solo), and the map will be large: about 300x bigger than the maps we see in the game’s Siege mode! There will be at least four dozens of outposts filled with loot, and the zeppelins will also drop legendary gear… and, as usual, the playable area will be shrunk over time, which we already saw in PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds or Fortnite: Battle Royale.
Todd Harris, the executive producer of Paladins, says „Riding on a mount through this massive fantasy-themed map, looking for gear and cooperating with your team, Paladins: Battlegrounds delivers some of the feel of open-world MMO PvP but all within a 20-minute match.”
Hi-Rez Studios’ president, Stew Chisan told DualShockers that the naming is unrelated to PUBG, and they discussed the subject with their attorneys, who approved their name. He says that the game mode is more of a homage to MMOs, adding that the name Battlegrounds is generic. PUBG Corp. did not trademark the name (which would be impossible to pull off – trademarking PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds was possible, as expected), but they did attack Fortnite: Battle Royale for cloning their gameplay (which we wrote about in detail before).
A few more words about Paladins: the 35th hero, Moji got announced (with a two-headed dragon mount), there’ll be a new mount (Battle Cats), and Team Deathmatch and a new map, Trade District are on their way. Hi-Rez Studio’s CEO, Erez Goren told DualShockers that there is a game (we don’t know which one) in development for the Nintendo Switch as well.
Battlegrounds everywhere! Paladins will receive this game mode in 2018, with a free-to-play approach, as expected.
