The scientist, who passed away yesterday, gets a tribute in EVE Online.
Stephen Hawking, who lived for seventy-six years, has become an unavoidable scientist in astrophysics and cosmology. As EVE Online is a space-themed MMO game, no wonder its players were significantly affected by the passing of Hawking. In short: they stopped shooting at each other’s spaceships. In long?
They covered the night sky in cynosural beacons, whose modules emit a bright, radiant light, and these are used by players to warp elsewhere. Until now, seeing such a beacon usually meant trouble, but yesterday, as well as today, they got out of inventories to tribute Stephen Hawking.
Another player decided to take a trip to EVE Online‘s player-run graveyard in the Molea system – there will be a memorial held here. The images below show how many players have used the cynosural beacons. The bigger the beacon, the more people use it.
We rarely see such a big tribute to someone in an MMO game. At least it shows that there is still humanity in all the players after all.
