An old name, new/old faces, and a new console!
Intellivision – quite a few decades have passed since the 1979 (test market) launch and the 1990 discontinuation, by the time it was sold three million units. Mattel’s console had to face none other than the Atari 2600. With its D-Pad (!) and real-time human voices, it was ahead of its time. Its name is now revived via the Intellivision Entertainment, with Tommy Tallarico at the helm.
You may have heard (!!!) Tallarico’s work in 16-bit games such as Aladdin and Earthworm Jim 2. Indeed, he started out as a musician, and since then, he created Video Games Live, which is a still running live video game music concert. It got five albums, with the sixth one recently having received funding on Kickstarter. Tallarico is so dedicated to the importance of the video game music that he managed to lobby to have Grammys recognize them as well successfully.
Tallarico has other names next to him at the helm of Intellivision Entertainment: Steve Roney (programmer since 1981, chairman), Bill Fisher (programmer since 1981, president of technology), Emily Reichbach Rosenthal (vice president, licensing), and Paul Nurminen (vice president of product development). Tallarico hopes to reimagine the Intellivision for the 21st century, while still maintaining its legacy.
Intellivision Entertainment‘s goal is to bring gamers together, introducing them to the name’s legacy. They plan to announce details on October 1, but before that, they will hold a Q&A today, at 12 PM Pacific, on Facebook – if there are interesting details, we may get back to them this weekend. The first 100K subscribers will have the chance to buy a unique, not-available-in-stores limited version of the console.
It’s not an April Fools’ joke.
