Based on a new report Sony will use AMD‘s Navi GPU that is specifically designed for PlayStation 5.
The news is coming from some insiders who reported originally to Forbes. Based on these PS5 will use the Zen architecture, while the GPU will be based on AMD Navi. If these are true, then PlayStation will use AMD parts again in this generation as well and based on previous leaks and speculations, it makes more and more sense.
The Zen technology might be familiar from the Ryzen CPUs from the PC space. But the Navi GPU seems to be much more interesting though because based on the news it is being made based on Sony‘s instructions. It seems like this collaboration is going on for a while now and it might be a primary reason why AMD wasn’t able to focus as much on RX Vega.
What’s still not clear however is if it will going to be a custom chip that the CPU and GPU will use together (SOC), or if they will be separated. The insiders haven’t talked about Microsoft’s and Navi’s connection either, so it’s possible that this time Xbox will use something different, non-AMD related. It’s also a possibility that the green team is simply looking for a different design and maybe they want to use Ryzen CPUs and AMD Vega.
