Aside from the 211 million dollars of crowdfunding from 2.2 million people, Cloud Imperium Games also brought in another 46 million dollars of investment for the games that have been in development for multiple years. Over 520 people work on them (up from 464 last year, and more of them are based outside the United States than within it).
This money is coming from Clive Calder and Keith Calder’s Snoot Entertainment (known in the film industry). Both people are into the music industry in the United Kingdom, and they gained 10% in Cloud Imperium, but Roberts still has 75% ownership of the company.
Roberts said in his Chairman letter update that Star Citizen‘s single-player campaign, Squadron 42, is set to have its beta testing in the second half of 2020. He confirmed that the money is going towards increasing the scale of the development, while marketing is on a bare minimum until the games are ready to be released.
Roberts says that due to this investment, he managed to ensure his company’s independence – so it’s safe to say that while Star Citizen‘s development is slow, it is progressing. Maybe it won’t become one of the major flops of the 2020s – we’ll see when the games will be available.
