This game is being developed in Pixel Reef, the studio of Eric Chahi – since he previously made Another World, From Dust, or Heart of Darkness, we should keep an eye on this game…
Chahi talked about Paper Beast, which is in development for PlayStation VR, then PlayStation 4, on the PlayStation Blog. He said that a few years ago, he was trying a few things with Unity Engine’s physics while having a few gameplay elements in his head. This is how the game’s concept was born, and then, he formed his studio as well. In Paper Beast, the team wanted to create a full, complete ecosystem with unique wildlife with excitement as we discover a land that humanity has not seen before. It’s a bunch of simulation on top of each other, but Chahi admittedly calls the game a virtual journey. It will have no dialogue, no spoken words, just like in Another World, or, for a more recent example, Journey!
The wildlife will react to how you approach it, creating a unique relationship, but we have to mention that it is not going to be a god game (like Populous), but it will have some elements from that genre, too. Why the PlayStation VR, though? Chahi said that he always enjoyed the 3D immersion, and the game will have spatial audio as well, which is why Pixel Reef has three employees that work full-time on the audio!
Paper Beast, which is described as a „playful exploration game set in a colourful ecosystem born out of big data,” is coming to PlayStation VR in late 2019, followed by a non-VR PlayStation 4 version in 2020. Is Chahi striking gold?
