The PlatinumGames studio’s head producer, Atsushi Inaba isn’t impressed by the Xbox Project Scarlett and the PlayStation 5. (It might even be the first time we hear something like this regarding the next-gen consoles!)
Inaba told Video Game Chronicle at E3 that he’s not that amazed about the two confirmed consoles for the next generation: „It’s OK, and by that I mean, I’m sure that things will move faster, graphics will be better and maybe it will be easier with less wait times… that’s good for the consumer. But it’s more of the same, quite frankly, compared to previous generations. It’s nothing that’s disruptive or super innovative if you ask me. [The] game hardware used to be about custom chips that you couldn’t do on PCs. Now you look at it and they’re just grabbing stuff that already exists.
The [Nintendo] Switch, for example, is a Tegra [chip] which already existed and the other consoles are using very similar chips and graphics cards to what you see on PCs, but maybe slightly updated. None of it seems unique to that hardware anymore. It’s hard to get excited about stuff that kind of already exists, but has been repurposed to a certain degree!”
Ouch. Now that is a burning comment, no matter how we look at it. We haven’t heard anything like that in the past year (or two-three months; we should consider what we hear since the first official details of the PlayStation 5…), and Inaba is missing the revolutionary hardware.
Indeed: both Sony and Microsoft are taking similar chips from AMD with slight modifications (for the CPU, it is going to be the Ryzen Zen 2, and for the GPU, it will be the Radeon Navi in both the next-gen Xbox and PlayStation, with some customization). And thus, we can easily say how consoles are PC-fying themselves (while in return, the multiplatform PC games are more and more console ports…).
