Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales – Thanks to the super Performance Mode, the PlayStation 5 will bring out tremendous speed with brutal picture quality!
Insomniac Games announced on Twitter today that the upcoming Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales game will receive an optional Performance Mode on PlayStation 5, which will significantly extend performance: we can play even at 4K and at 60 FPS. If this were the performance mode, we’d be curious to see what would have to be turned off for it: either ray-tracing or other environmental effects to get peak performance on the white-and-black console.
Brian Horton, the game’s creative director, said of the game on PlayStation Blog:
„As we continued with the Marvel’s Spider-Man universe, we knew that Miles’s origin story as a Spider-Man was something that needed its own game. Miles’s multicultural background reflects a more modern, diverse world and we wanted to give players a new story, with new set-pieces, fresh villains, and unique quests across Marvel’s New York City. This had to be a can’t-miss next adventure in the Marvel’s Spider-Man universe.”

„We are also excited for the game to demonstrate the power of PlayStation 5 this holiday. Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales will show off near-instant loading, ray-tracing, 3D audio and the DualSense controller. We’ve upgraded our characters with 4D scans and improved skin shading for more realistic looking characters and spline-based hair that moves far more naturally. Many of the city’s assets have also been updated to take advantage of the new console. As you experience Miles’s story, you’ll see, hear, and feel things in a whole new way, all thanks to PS5.”
So for Miles Morales to get a Performance Mode, it’s worth considering whether the original Marvel’s Spider-Man will get a similar one in retrospect. If both games could achieve the same 4K / 60 FPS on the same engine on the PlayStation 5, it would also be a great indication of what else awaits us on the PlayStation 5 support, performance improvements and backward compatibility wise. Of course, only time will tell, because Sony has still not elaborated on what we can expect from the PlayStation 5 for previous-generation games.
Many have said that Marvel’s Spider-Man will never run at 60 frames per second, well they may be surprised now: there will be a Spidey game that will actually know 60 FPS, plus 4K, so the Digital Foundry guys’ dream is also met.
Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales is currently announced as a PlayStation 5 exclusive. Although we don’t yet know an official release date for Miles Morales, Insomniac Games has stated that their game will be available during the holiday season, just in time so it will snow on the streets of New York equally in the game and in real life.
