Nintendo might want to compete with Sony and Microsoft after all, even though they have quit the direct competition since the Wii.
Bloomberg reports (even in Japanese) that next year, a new Nintendo Switch model will launch. The site is citing people familiar with the matter. They claim that this model’s specifications are not finalized yet, but they added that the big N has already considered a few features (such as improved processing power that would allow this Switch to support 4K graphics).
Bloomberg’s sources claim that the games designed for this new Switch (including both first-party and third-party titles) will be aimed at both casual and hardcore audiences. Also, Nintendo has been focusing on its 2021 line-up, meaning 2020 isn’t getting much of attention (which is understandable: they don’t crunch developers so if they need time, they just delay the games, and they released Animal Crossing: New Horizons, which could single-handedly bring in enough profit for them for this year).
The first publication to mention the new Nintendo Switch model was a Taiwanese newspaper called United Daily News. Their report claims the Switch XL (this is our name) would offer improved interactivity and better image quality. And since Nintendo’s spokesperson declined to comment on Bloomberg’s report, silence can mean more than a thousand words.
Currently, two Nintendo Switch models are on the market. The regular one that got a minor revision, as well as the Nintendo Switch Lite, which gets rid of the ability to dock it, but it provides more portability, plus it costs less than the regular version. As both the PlayStation 5 and the new Xbox will launch in two versions, seeing the Switch have three would be reasonable (the Switch Lite would be the entry model then).
