The media and the console manufacturer claim something different – Sony denies Bloomberg’s claims.
Yesterday, we wrote this based on what Bloomberg reported: „)) that Sony Interactive Entertainment (SIE) cut its estimated PlayStation 5 production volume by March 2021. However, the issue is that they cut it by FOUR million units to eleven! (And that’s about a 30% cut…) The reason behind it is not the lack of interest about the console but the unstable production yield of the console’s custom-designed system-on-a-chip, according to Bloomberg’s sources familiar with the matter. It means that there’s a lack of components, resulting in a lack of units.”
The company has responded by sending the following statement to Gamesindustry: „While we do not release details related to manufacturing, the information provided by Bloomberg is false. We have not changed the production number for PlayStation 5 since the start of mass production.”
The mass production of the PlayStation 5 started this summer, and going by what they said, they did not change their plans, even though in July, based on what Nikkei and Bloomberg said, we wrote that they are increasing the production volume in anticipation of more demand due to the coronavirus.
Sony is secretive with the production volume, so we have no clue where to go from here. Maybe tonight, they will announce the pricing of the PlayStation 5 Standard Edition and the PlayStation 5 Digital Edition in the broadcast. We have seen several pricing possibilities, but all of them seems to point at 499 USD/EUR for the more expensive version, which would hit price parity with the main competitor, the Xbox Series X.
Sony can deny something that has no hard proof behind it, so they can still have system-on-a-chip production issues even if they say they don’t.
