PlayStation 5: We Play More Offline Than Online

The anti-social approach seems to work for Sony, according to some leaked documents.

These documents were obtained by Vice, and they were sent internally to developers by Sony in late 2019. According to them, most players spend more time offline than online, which is why we can say that the gaming industry consists of more than Fortnite and Call of Duty. It also mentioned some of the PlayStation 5 user interface elements (such as the activity cards and the game help hints) to make us focus more on single-player games, giving us an ample way to quickly overview how much time and effort we need to complete some challenges.

„In an ideal world, every player has the time to spend hours per day, every day, playing [single-player] games. In reality, most people have jobs. Or kids. Or school. Or all of the above. Often, the free time comes wedged between other obligations. An hour before bed. A 30-minute break between homework assignments.

In a busy world, that time [to play] might not come for a while. When they finally do find a spare hour, they’ve forgotten where they were, and what they were doing. Then what? We can change “Should I start playing?” to “Which part should I start playing?” The options are there. The choices are clear. The game is calling. Pick up that controller. It’s time to play,” Sony’s document writes.

VGC reports that in the United Kingdom, the PlayStation 5 has outsold even the PlayStation 4 with the launch sales. The Xbox Series X and the Xbox Series S sold a total of 155K units on the first day, but the PS5 has gone further, beating the PS4 in the process, which reached a quarter-million of sales. The PlayStation 5’s better selling edition, according to VGC’s sources, was the PlayStation 5 Standard Edition, meaning people still prefer to trade discs. Keep in mind that Microsoft could have sold more Xboxes if they had more stock.

So Sony continues to have a more of a traditional route with its games, and if you think about it, not many Sony Interactive Entertainment titles had a multiplayer focus in the recent years…

Still, she likes puzzle and story-oriented games, like Sherlock Holmes: Crimes & Punishments, which is her favourite title. She also played The Sims 3, but after accidentally killing a whole sim family, swore not to play it again. (For our office address, email and phone number check out our IMPRESSUM)
