The head of Valve (who is still stuck in New Zealand) confirmed that his company is preparing several games to be announced…
After completing the development of Half-Life: Alyx last spring, Gabe Newell wanted to take a small break in New Zealand. However, the coronavirus global pandemic led to him getting stuck in that country, but he doesn’t seem to be bothered about it. He was interviewed on 1 News, talking about Cyberpunk 2077: „I have a lot of sympathy with a situation that every game developer finds themselves in. All I know is that there are a lot of very happy gamers in the PC space, which are the ones that are most visible to us. There are aspects of the game that are just brilliant, and it shows a tremendous amount of work — it’s unfair to throw stones at any other developer because just getting something as complex and ambitious as that out the door is pretty amazing.
When people have [negative] reactions, my first thought is that this is an opportunity for us, and I assume that the Cyberpunk 2077 developers are similarly just using it to crank through and make improvements that are going to be beneficial to their customers. They have a long history of doing a great job, of continuing to invest in their products over time and I suspect that they’re going to be very good at making their customers happy over time,” Newell said. Those situations are possibly being deadlines and the leadership demanding certain things.
In the same interview, he confirmed that Valve is preparing a few games in its oven: „We have games in development that we’re going to be announcing — it’s fun to ship games. [Half-Life: Alyx] was great — to be back doing single-player games, that created a lot of momentum inside of the company to do more of that.” However, don’t expect it to be Half-Life 3 or Portal 3. He also talked about these questions: „I’ve successfully not spoken about those things for a long time and I hope to continue to not talk about them until they are moot questions. Then maybe we’ll move on to a new set of questions. The nice thing is, by not answering those questions, I avoid the community coming up with new, equally-difficult-to-answer questions.”
Finally, he responded to a rumour that has been floating around. It claims that Valve is developing a PC vs. VR asymmetric multiplayer titles with the codename Citadel: „We have a bunch of code names — are you referring to a code name? I don’t know what ‘Citadel’ is — what is Citadel?”
Never change, Gaben…
