After 1942 and 2142, it was a question of time when DICE and Electronic Arts will pull the 2042 card, as for them, it seems 42 is indeed the answer.
The game, which was named by us as Battlefield 6 or Battlefield up to this point, was christened and announced by the publisher, and thus, we learned that it is going to be a cross-gen game that has no singleplayer campaign… so we’re going to see a repeat of 2015’s Star Wars: Battlefront, which might not be a good omen.
Here’s an overview of the game by Electronic Arts: „Battlefield 2042 is a first-person shooter that marks the return to the iconic all-out warfare of the franchise. In a near-future world transformed by disorder, adapt, and overcome dynamically-changing battlegrounds with the help of your squad and a cutting-edge arsenal. With support for 128 players, Battlefield 2042 brings unprecedented scale on vast battlegrounds across the globe. Players will take on several massive experiences, from updated multiplayer modes like Conquest and Breakthrough to the all-new Hazard Zone.
[…] U.S.A. and Russia stand at the brink of war. Proxy wars have waged for decades, generating experienced but displaced combat veterans. These Specialists use their skills to shape the future—a future worth fighting for. […] Battlefield 2042 introduces seven vast maps for up to 128 players. From Seoul’s cities to Egypt’s deserts, every map offers a unique experience based on the natural environment. […] Customize weapons, gadgets, and vehicles in-battle to tip the scales in your favour. Summon a robotic dog built for battle, employ a grappling hook, or don your very own wingsuit. […] Choose your role on the battlefield and form hand-tailored squads through the new Specialist system. Based on Battlefield‘s four Classes, Specialists have one unique Specialty and Trait—but the rest of the loadout is fully customizable,” the publisher wrote. However, the PlayStation 4 and the Xbox One versions of the game will only allow 64 players to compete. 128 is out of the picture there.
If you pre-order the game, you will get early access to open beta, the Baku ACB-90 melee takedown knife, the Mr Chompy epic weapon charm, the Landfall player card background, and Old Guard tag. Battlefield 2042 will cost 60 dollars on PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC, while the PlayStation 5/Xbox Series versions will be 70 bucks. The gold edition (90 USD on PC, 100 on consoles) will give you early access to the game’s launch, the year one season pass (four new Specialists with one per Season, four battle passes, and three Epic Skin Bundles [Blistered Earth, Tempest, and Cold Blood]). There’s also the cross-gen bundle on consoles. If you buy the game on PlayStation 5, you will also get it on PlayStation 4, for example. The ultimate edition (110 USD on PC, 120 on consoles) will also get you the Midnight Ultimate Bundle (Shadow Stalker Legendary Outfit, Obsidian Legendary Weapon Skin, and Onyx Legendary Vehicle Skin), the official digital art book, and an exclusive digital soundtrack. Seeing how they name the rarity of skins, we’re afraid to see what else will be in the game. The four classes are assault, support, engineer, and scout. Maps? Kaleidoscope – South Korea, Manifesto – Singapore, Orbital – Guyana, Hourglass – Qatar, Rupture – Antarctica, also India and Egypt.
Battlefield 2042 will launch on October 22 on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series, PC (Origin, Steam, Epic Games Store), PlayStation 4, and Xbox One. Early access will begin on October 15. The gameplay reveal will happen at the Microsoft/Bethesda E3 conference. The game will likely have cross-play, as well as some sort of a free-to-play component. AI bots are in, guaranteed.
