Take-Two and Rockstar are heading towards the future: its price is that two older machines will no longer have access to Grand Theft Auto Online.
Rockstar announced that Grand Theft Auto Online is dead on PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 on December 16. But first, on September 16, 2021, PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 versions of Shark Cards for Grand Theft Auto Online will be no longer sold, followed by Grand Theft Auto Online services for PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 versions, including website stat tracking via the Rockstar Games Social Club becoming no longer available on December 16. However, Grand Theft Auto V Story Mode for PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 are not impacted.
This isn’t the only game that is facing the online graveyard. On September 16, two other games will see their online portions shut down: L.A. Noire on PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 will see its online services, including website stat tracking via the Rockstar Games Social Club becoming no longer available, but L.A. Noire Story Mode for PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 are not impacted. This applies to Max Payne 3 as well on the PS3/X360 duo.
There’s an interesting part in the Q&A: „Will I be able to transfer my progress from Grand Theft Auto Online on PlayStation 3 or Xbox 360 to current console generations before it is shut down on December 16, 2021?” The answer is: „No, this is not possible. There is no feature available to transfer character data or progress from those platforms. All website stat tracking for PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 via the Rockstar Games Social Club will also be removed.” So it means we might have to do a PlayStation 3 > PlayStation 4 > PlayStation 5 route or Xbox 360 > Xbox One > Xbox Series, depending on the platform.
One more question: „Can I get a refund for Shark Card purchases for Grand Theft Auto Online on PlayStation 3 or Xbox 360 or transfer the balance to current console generations?” The answer is: „Virtual currency and virtual goods purchases are platform-specific and cannot be refunded or transferred. Please see our End User License Agreement for additional details.”
We can thus say that the birthplace of Grand Theft Auto Online (as Grand Theft Auto V first launched on PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 in September 2013) will see its death after eight years.
