The French publisher may have accepted a concept for a more traditional return of Splinter Cell (because his appearances in Ghost Recon: Wildlands, or on mobile or VR can’t be called a new, proper game…).
Tom Henderson (who has been a relatively reliable source of information lately) wrote on VGC that Yves Guillemot and his team are trying to regain the trust of fans of the Splinter Cell franchise after failing to win it back with the announcement of mobile and virtual reality adventures for Mr Fisher, and have given the green light to a new, more traditional incarnation.
“It’s not clear which studios are working on the project, though two people with knowledge of Ubisoft’s plans suggested the new Splinter Cell was being led by a studio outside of its traditional Montreal base. The sources said the title is in an early production phase, but there’s a small chance it could be announced next year,” Henderson wrote.
Ubisoft Montreal not being at the helm makes sense, as they’re most likely dealing with a live service game called Assassin’s Creed: Infinity. If what Henderson claims is true, Splinter Cell could be a surprise announcement at E3 2022.
It’s been a long time since the last “old school” Splinter Cell was released. Maybe not everyone remembers, but in 2013, Splinter Cell: Blacklist was released for PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, Nintendo Wii U and PC. Since then, more than a generation of consoles has passed, and Ubisoft CEO Yves Guillemot has said that they haven’t forgotten about old Sam, but so far, there hasn’t been much development on a classic Splinter Cell. (But if he’s only just nodded at a project, then the French CEO could have been lying…?)
Just don’t end up like Ghost Recon Frontline: the French company has been pretty good at seeing what the fans want (they offered a battle royale instead of a tactical shooter, but they postponed the closed testing due to lack of demand…). If the new Splinter Cell is some live service nonsense, Ubisoft will make that mistake again.
