Bethesda Game Studios is again making money on The Elder Scrolls V, which has been out for almost ten years now, and it’s not free to upgrade from a previous version.
While The Elder Scrolls VI is still years away (which is why Todd Howard announced it way too early at E3 years ago), as the studio is bringing us Starfield first next year (of course, we better be dubious about release dates because we’re hearing about a ton of games coming later than previously announced dates again these days), and only then will they get started on Todd Howard’s next opus.
Except for the update, well, that won’t be cheap. So if we want The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim Anniversary Edition and we have the previous re-release of the game, which was called the Special Edition, we’ll still have to pay. That’s $20. OK, there’s a free thing: if you upgrade from the PlayStation 4, Xbox One edition of Skyrim, which is celebrating its 10th birthday, you can migrate to the PlayStation 5, Xbox Series version for free if you have the Special AND the Anniversary Edition.
And what about those who are just jumping into the world of Skyrim for the first time? Well, do they have more to pay more? $50. That’s a pretty hefty price tag for a ten-year-old game that’s being re-released for the umpteenth time. OK, sure, it includes all the Creation Club add-ons, and if we had bought them one by one, we would have had $150 less in our bank account, but these days, they don’t charge much for updates this much. Fishing, Survival Mode, the Saints & Seducers storyline, and the Rare Curios gear pack will be available for free to Special Edition owners.
Spending 20 dollars for the Bethesda-approved mods (while the ones made for The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim Special Edition won’t work by default without extra work, we’ve written about this before) might not sound the right decision. The new edition of the game will be released on the eleventh of November (next Thursday) on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series, PC, PlayStation 4 and Xbox One.
