Less than a year outside the French publisher, veteran Assassin’s Creed writer Darby McDevitt…
We may have reported earlier that McDevitt was leaving Ubisoft behind to pursue new challenges. Well, under new challenges, he was trying his hand at Illogika (where he was narrative director of A Quiet Place, to be precise; set in the same universe as John Krasinski’s films), but it seems that McDevitt didn’t find the right place because he was happy to announce that Ubisoft has welcomed back a veteran writer who will be involved in the next instalment of Assassin’s Creed, which is likely to go in the direction of live service, even in the next instalment, Infinity.
McDevitt was the narrative director on Assassin’s Creed: Valhalla and an unannounced project and previously served as lead writer on Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag, Assassin’s Creed: Revelations, and the short film Assassin’s Creed: Embers. But he also has Assassin’s Creed: Origins, Assassin’s Creed: Unity and Assassin’s Creed: Bloodlines on his CV, so there’s not been a big game in the last decade or so that he hasn’t had a story to tell.
McDevitt has confirmed on Twitter that he will indeed continue his work at Ubisoft. “It’s true! As I pondered my career over the past year, I focused on my desire to explore new ideas and unknown frontiers. Much to my delight, this is reflected in my return to Ubisoft to work on AC. I’m excited to continue my journey. Stay tuned! On a personal note, I have never been more excited about the places we’re going and the stories I get to tell with this crew,” he wrote.
Ubisoft can rest easy about one angle for the next Assassin’s Creed, as they can rely on a proven name from within the company and not have to rely on another person to take on the task. But the question is (as with Far Cry; we wrote about that a while back), is it a good idea to go live service with Assassin’s Creed…?
