The writer behind Game of Thrones has explained how the Japanese studio pulled him into the development of the Elden Ring backstory.
George R.R. Martin wrote on his blog that, incredibly, he is working on his first video game in a long time. The writer admits that it’s not his preferred genre for entertainment. However, when Hidetaka Miyazaki, the head of FromSoftware, approached him with an offer, it was too exciting for him to say no. (So it’s not only in the mafia that such an offer is so hard to refuse!)
“Miyazaki and his team from FromSoftware were doing ground-breaking stuff with gorgeous art, and what they wanted from me was just a bit of world-building: a deep, dark, resonant world to serve as a foundation for the game they planned to create. And as it happens, I love creating worlds and writing imaginary history,” Martin wrote.
Martin doesn’t consider himself a gamer, but he’s not without some classic games: Railroad Tycoon, Master of Orion and Romance of the Three Kingdoms, are all fond memories for him (and they’re older franchises, not newer IPs). He added that his work on Elden Ring was done several years ago, confirming that the game’s starting point was world-building and that development followed from there. He also said that he had nothing to do with the Elden Ring’s text or dialogue, but Martin said the game looked amazing, so he was happy with the project…
So the Japanese studio has allowed the writer to let his thoughts out, and FromSoftware has benefited from that, so it’s indeed a win-win situation for Martin and the Japanese. We’ll have to wait a little longer for the result, as Elden Ring will be released on February 25 for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series, PC, PlayStation 4 and Xbox One.
