Will The Resident Evil 4 Remake Be Scarier Than The Original?

Capcom hasn’t officially announced that it’s remaking Resident Evil 4, which was finally released in 2005 after multiple development potholes. Still, if we keep hearing about the project, it must exist…

In late 2020, early 2021, we already heard (and wrote) that Capcom had initially outsourced the RE4 revamp to M-Two. This studio helped develop the Resident Evil 3 Remake. However, Capcom took it back from the studio, made up of ex-Capcom, ex-PlatinumGames members, because the Japanese team would have stayed closer to the original concept than the publisher wanted (expansion, extension…). So an in-house overhaul could be done, similar to the second part.

Writing for Fanbyte, Imran Khan confirmed that M-Two’s involvement has been scaled down and changes have been made to the project, but we’ve also heard more details that we didn’t have before. Reportedly, Capcom is messing with the game’s timeline: events that happened during the day (such as when Leon S. Kennedy first runs into the infected villagers) would now take place at night, as the Japanese company is looking to create a darker, scarier experience, taking inspiration from the Nintendo GameCube trailers. The Albert Wesker artwork that we previously showcased is fake or from another project, the site claims.

To elaborate the trailer thought: the first concept for Resident Evil 4 was spun off from the franchise under the direction of Hideki Kamiya, and that’s how Devil May Cry came to be. The second, castle concept around 2001-2002 with the black fog antagonist was also dropped, followed by the third version in 2003. Perhaps it was the most impressive: the hallucination version with the hooked antagonist. Capcom can use these two iterations as inspiration.

There are several characters that Capcom wants to give extra attention to, and Ada Wong (who was initially in Resident Evil: Village but was cut) comes to mind. Her Operation: Ada and Separate Ways side missions can be combined to expand our experience. It is now the focus of M-Two, as they are no longer leading the remake’s development. Khan doesn’t know if Ada will be part of the pack by default or expect it as DLC.

All of this information is unofficial, of course, but the remastered versions of Resident Evil 2 and 3 were indeed both more atmospheric than the original PS1 instalments…
