Sony Interactive Entertainment Santa Monica’s game received an unusual comparison: the story of Kratos and Atreus are shown side-by-side on PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4 and Valve’s portable PC.
The comparison is not a stupid one. God of War has been out on PlayStation 4 for over four years now (it launched on April 20 2018). However, it’s still a little more potent on PlayStation 5 (there’s no native PS5 version, but the PlayStation 4 Pro version is running on the console that launched in November 2020). Still, the PC transcript was released on January 14, 2022, on a better-late-than-never basis.
ElAnalistaDeBits made a comparison between PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5 and Steam Deck. According to him, “I wouldn’t recommend FidelityFX Super Resolution (FSR) for resolutions as low as Steam Deck in handheld mode. If we connect it to a monitor, using FSR in Maximum quality mode at 1080p to maintain a stable framerate is a good idea.
There is no acceptable way to get 60 FPS on the Steam Deck, even with the lowest settings. It is best to lock your framerate at 30 FPS. Overall, playing an AAA game like God of War on a laptop with higher quality than the PlayStation 4 is a wonderful experience.” The PlayStation 5 version has its hands a bit tied: it runs God of War, which is being scaled up (with checkerboard) to 4K resolution for this year or its rumoured sequel next year, but at least at 60 FPS.
You can get even higher resolution and performance with the proper hardware on PC. Steam Deck shows better draw distance, better textures here and there (depending on assets), and better load times as PlayStation 5’s backwards support doesn’t use the SSD’s capabilities…
