Sony’s CEO gave a simple yet logical reason why they needed the studio known for Destiny.
We mentioned Sony’s latest strategy brief today because of Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora (discussed in more detail), but there’s another topic worth reading about. Sony CEO Kenichiro Yoshida has explained the reason for the Bungie acquisition, saying that it will allow them to develop Sony’s live service capabilities and help them become a more multiplatform company. (Also, the metaverse/cross-entertainment approach is a reason, as discussed before.)
Sony isn’t leaving single-player games behind (God of War: Ragnarok is a great example), but the company is looking to expand and focus on other things (expanding to mobile is another area!), and the acquisition of Bungie” will be a catalyst to enhance our live service game capabilities” and “represents a major step forward in becoming multiplatform”, according to Yoshida. There’s also the PC expansion, where they’re also thinking about further releases. Uncharted: Legacy of Thieves Collection (already available on PlayStation 5) will be their next PC port and is supposedly coming out in June. MLB The Show 22, the latest instalment of their annual baseball game, is out on Xbox, but beyond that, we don’t see much in the way of multiplatform thoughts yet.
The Express Tribune reported what Epic Games’ Tim Sweeney said. According to him, PlayStation is already playing “a huge role in the social gaming revolution that’s nurturing the growth of the metaverse as a new entertainment medium.” And Yoshida cited Fortnite in particular as an inspiration for “a social space and live network space where games, music, movies, and anime intersect”. For anime, think Funimation and Crunchyroll: Sony owns both of the companies known for their anime involvement.
Will this approach bring PlayStation Home back? It would make sense.
