DICE will continue to focus on a single franchise, making you wonder whether developers will get bored (or burnt out) of it.
DICE has a new director in Rebecka Coutaz (after she joined the company in November). She has already had her first interview with Gamesindustry, and she said that the studio doesn’t have time to focus on other projects besides Battlefield, as their goal is to become the leading developer in the market for interior view shooters. Coutaz admitted, “We are only focusing on Battlefield 2042. There is no time for anything else, and this is what we want to do. In three years, we want to be the first-person shooter powerhouse DICE deserves, and that is what we’re going for.”
After the disappointing launch of Battlefield 2042, Coutaz said that DICE had spent the last six months improving and developing what they are so confident in their product that they believe it was an excellent time to launch the first season of the game, which will use a live service model, in early June. They’ve already had “good feedback on that.” “The players are enjoying our map and the content that we have provided, so it’s a win for us and makes us feel better. The team is here to make Battlefield, and they’re passionate about Battlefield. We have many Battlefield veterans. So we need to improve Battlefield 2042 and the experience we can provide our players. We owe them that,” Coutaz added.
Electronic Arts CEO Andrew Wilson said back in May that they have a long-term commitment to Battlefield 2042 because it’s “one of the great franchises of our industry, built by one of the great teams in the industry, and our expectations are it’s going to continue to grow and be an essential part of our portfolio for many, many years to come.” Battlefield 2042 will get four seasons of live service content in a year, but we heard during June that a small team is working on DLC as the focus within the studio is already on the next game. The publisher has refuted it, and Coutaz also stressed, “I want the team to be proud about Battlefield 2042. That is what they are chasing, and they have their heart and passion there. We want to be proud of DICE. We want DICE to be the number one spot for first-person shooter games in Europe and one of the powerhouses in the world. It’s a fabulous team. We’re going to make magic together.”
In December, EA said that the goal is to create an interconnected Battlefield universe. Oscar Gabrielson, former head of DICE, has left the publisher, while Vince Zampella, founder of Respawn, has taken over as Battlefield boss. Halo designer Marcus Lehto is also at the publisher, leading a small team in Seattle tasked with expanding the series with a meaningful narrative.
