It won’t be surprising if not many people have heard about one of the console’s features launched over a year ago.

Accolades. It’s what you get when you’re playing online on your PlayStation 5 and another player sends you a message (not via the basic messaging!) saying you’ve done an excellent job. How many of us has this happened to? It’s not an exaggeration if many of us have no such memory, and perhaps for that reason, it’s no surprise that Sony is quietly planning to phase out the feature…

“In the fall of 2022, the Accolades feature on PlayStation 5 will no longer be supported. The feature hasn’t seen the level of usage we anticipated, so we are refocusing our efforts. We encourage the community to continue to send positive messages to one another,” reads the PlayStation website. At least you can’t say Sony didn’t try. You can still acknowledge your teammate or even your opponent in games if you’ve had a fair play with (or against) them. It wouldn’t be much of a surprise if Warner’s Super Smash Bros. clone MultiVersus took the idea for the game’s “toast” from here. (We’re thinking of Mortal Kombat-style praise or one of the game’s currencies that we can give and receive from other players.)

So the idea was not a bad one. Still, perhaps Sony did not take the necessary marketing seriously because if it is the first time that many people have discovered that the console has such a feature, it is not the players’ fault because if they do not know that Accolades is in PlayStation 5, they are not to blame. With the action-reaction thought, if Sony didn’t advertise the feature, don’t be surprised if gamers didn’t take advantage of it either!

The saddest thing about the departure of Accolades is that the feature was already in the PlayStation 5 at launch. So this might be the first we’ve heard of it in over a year and a half. For that, only a sarcastic round of applause for Sony is due…
