The Lords of the Fallen picks up a thousand years after FromSoft’s 2014 challenger.
Announced at Gamescom, The Lords of the Fallen is a reboot of the 2014 game of the same name, developed by CI Games. The reboot takes place more than a thousand years after the first game’s events and offers a significantly increased scope – CI Games promises a “vast, interconnected world” that’s more than five times larger than the original. Whether it can compete with the vast map of the Elden Ring remains to be seen, but the connectivity is undoubtedly reminiscent of one of the most exciting parts of the Dark Souls map.
The trailer focuses on how the world has changed in the millennia since The Lords of the Fallen.
Even after defeat, the gods do not stay dead forever, and the effects of those destroyed a thousand years ago are once again felt, corrupting the land in a futile millennia-long effort to keep the dead dead dead.
The Lords of the Fallen was released in 2014, three years after the original Dark Souls. It is arguably one of the earliest “Souls-like” games/clones – the first to borrow gameplay and internal mythology from Dark Souls and Demons Souls. Although this genre is a much more fluid field today than it was eight years ago, The Lords of the Fallen got there long before Nioh or Chronos and even preceded indie hits like Titan Souls or Salt and Sanctuary.
The trailer has a definite Souls feel, which is no surprise.
Whether it’s the grim mythology, the lone hero, the ferocious battles or the gritty boss fights, The Lords of the Fallen is still a tribute to FromSoft’s work. The last attempt was competent but struggled to cut through the dominance of Dark Souls, even at the series’ relative nadir around Dark Souls 2, so it will be interesting to see how the reboot fares in the shadow of Elden Ring.
There is currently no release date for The Lords of the Fallen, but it will be coming to PS5, Xbox Series X and PC via Steam.
