Will The PlayStation VR2 Be More Powerful Than PC VR?

The CEO of the studio behind the VR multiplayer shooter, Pavlov, is optimistic about the virtual reality headset that’s due out in two weeks.

A picture of the CEO of Vankrupt Games has surfaced on Twitter. It’s the team that created Pavlov (which is headed as an opening title for Sony’s device), and according to the person who goes by the name Davevillz on Discord, “the PlayStation VR2’s performance is maybe 10% above PC VR because it’s a console and rendering is much more efficient.” Then again, PC virtual reality requires a beefier processor and an equally powerful graphics card, so it’s no wonder he got the question about what card he uses. He replied that it was the Nvidia GeForce RTX 3090 Ti, which still costs more than a thousand dollars.

It’s not clear how seriously this statement can be taken because the PlayStation VR2 might be able to outpace, say, Valve’s Index at the moment, but in two or three years, PC technology will be well ahead of it, while the PSVR2 will be stuck with its fixed hardware specs. Let’s also remember that the PlayStation VR2 will be more expensive than the PlayStation 5 (which became more costly in the autumn, and there’s no way Sony and Microsoft will even consider lowering the price) when it launches. Since you’ll need that, it’ll be at least €1150 for console VR.

Meanwhile, Sony’s marketing is incomprehensible. Okay, they’re pushing the Live from PS5 campaign for PlayStation 5. Still, we don’t hear much about such an ad campaign for PlayStation VR2, and they’ve hidden how many games are planned for the device outside of the titles already announced in their Q&A regarding the company’s headset. They don’t seem to advertise that there are over a hundred games in development for the device. Where is the confidence in the product? Is it not true what Bloomberg recently reported? (The disappointing pre-orders have led to lowering the production of the PSVR2; Sony has denied this…)
