History could repeat itself, and the PlayStation 5 could follow the same strategy as its predecessor.
According to Insider Gaming, a significant PlayStation 5 hardware redesign is underway at Sony, and the new console could hit the shelves towards the end of 2024. According to one of the site’s sources, the Blu-ray drive that has been rumored for months and can be connected to the console (i.e., not built in as standard) is just the beginning for the new PlayStation 5 hardware. In short, the PlayStation 5 Pro could become a reality, making it follow along the lines of the PlayStation 4 Slim and PlayStation 4 Pro.
We have no idea how the PlayStation 5 Pro hardware might differ from the current PlayStation 5 Standard Edition and the PlayStation 5 Digital Edition, which omits the Blu-ray drive but is cheaper (and rumored to be NOT compatible with the optical drive, to be sold separately as well). According to Insider Gaming, Mark Cerny (the internal architect for the PlayStation Vita, the PlayStation 4, and the PlayStation 5) has filed a patent that suggests Sony is looking to improve ray tracing performance.
It’s not official, of course, but if what the site said earlier is true, this redesigned PlayStation 5 (perhaps we should call it the PlayStation 5 Slim), which doesn’t have an optical drive as standard, should be unveiled in June (when Sony is supposed to reveal in a massive broadcast how the PlayStation 5 games line-up will look over the next 2-3 years…). It won’t be the more powerful model yet, but it should be available by the end of the year, as it would be marketing suicide to leave a few weeks, possibly less than two months, between the reveal of the redesigned model and its release. After all, we are not talking about an iPhone that is updated every year.
We’ll see what’s true of it. But we do fear how much we’ll have to pay for the PlayStation 5 Pro if there is one. Because, at the moment, it doesn’t look like Sony is going to SLASH the price.
