Square Enix is sacrificing a high frame rate in their game (which could be the last numbered main part, as they were said to be considering dropping the numbers last week), but in return, a vital game element will be better quality.
Like any self-respecting current-gen game, Final Fantasy XVI will have a performance-focused graphical mode. Square Enix’s game will aim for 60 FPS during combat, but beyond that, for example, it won’t be as stable during exploration. It was confirmed by the game’s director Hiroshi Takai to a Taiwanese publication, GNN, translated from Chinese to English on Reddit, so we can report on the new details.
Takai explained that there are certain conditions on what frame rate Final Fantasy XVI runs at. 60 FPS is the target, but it may change. In return, the Japanese team has done their best to fine-tune the combat to optimize the visuals better while fighting enemies so that the frame rate will remain stable, and they can focus on lighting and shadows, for example. During intense battles, their goal was to allow the player to focus on the battles as much as possible. This situation may change, as Takai says that the game’s performance might be modified in post-launch patches.
According to Takai, Final Fantasy XVI’s side quests will vary in length and sometimes have multiple steps to get a continuing story. Each one will give rewards, but the main reason behind playing them all the way through will be to allow the player to learn more about Valisthea’s world. He gave one example: a side quest opens up riding Chocobos while providing information on why it is possible in Valisthea.
Final Fantasy XVI will be released on PlayStation 5 on June 22 and will also have a PC port (the frame rate limitation might be lifted by then), but we’d better not expect that until 2024.
