The game’s director says he can now do what he’s been thinking about for a decade.
During the Tokyo Game Show, Capcom’s game got a more in-depth reveal (and we wrote about it), but there are some new details. For example, Pawn characters are offline during TGS (i.e., made in-house), but when the game launches, you can bring others’ onto your team. So you have to think of what Hideo Kojima implemented in Death Stranding: community gameplay can be created this way. In addition, the interview with VGC raised some interesting ideas.
Yoshiaki Hirabayashi, producer at Capcom, says that Dragon’s Dogma is a valuable IP for the Japanese company and that the sequel was confirmed during the game’s tenth anniversary. And director Hideaki Itsuno said they had tried to cover up the shortcomings of the first installment in the sequel. (Remember that Dragon’s Dogma was released in 2012 for PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360, so two previous console generations before indeed led to limitations in the concept’s execution.)
“We mostly just wanted to take things that we couldn’t achieve in Dragon’s Dogma when it came out, whether from lack of time or pushing the hardware’s limits at the time. So the main inspiration was sort of ourselves and finally being able to achieve what we wanted on this current console generation. One thing that many players said about the original game was that they often heard the same thing from the pawns. That was a bit of a technical limitation at the time in how much we could include for pawn dialogue,” Itsuno said.
We’ve embedded two videos from the footage captured at the Tokyo Game Show, and from this, we can tell you that the game is well under development, so it wouldn’t be surprising to see a release in the first half of 2024 for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series and PC.
