Gabe Newell and his team are tight-lipped: Valve is open about whether or not there will be NFTs in the game, which was released a month ago.
PCGamer had the chance to ask the developers if they plan to include NFTs in the game, which would be a strange thing to do, as the majority of gamers are not asking for this technology, as many are skeptical about web3 and crypto. In the case of NFTs, we have seen several companies try: Ubisoft and Square Enix in particular jumped at the first opportunity, and the French publisher had its own NFT market that came as quickly as it failed!
Counter-Strike 2 would have had a chance to go NFT, but at least Valve kept its word: the player inventory and weapon skins were migrated from CS:GO (Counter-Strike: Global Offensive) to Counter-Strike 2. “From the beginning of development, we knew that CS2 would eventually replace CS:GO, and we wanted to make sure that players could keep as many of their CS:GO skills and items as possible. So we started early in the process to make sure that all CS:GO weapons, stickers, agents, and music were supported in CS2.
There were non-trivial challenges in making older items fit into the look and feel of the new game, but the feature was something we knew would be very important to players. For us, moving the items forward is just the customer-centric way to bridge between one game and its successor. Sometimes people talk about NFTs in the context of Counter-Strike items, but to be honest, we don’t know enough about NFTs to get involved in that conversation. We just try to make the best decisions we can about the things our players care about,” Valve’s developers said.
The company can’t really say that NFTs should be forgotten as they are, but they couldn’t have been more subtle in their negative, condemnatory comments about them, and consequently would only do so if the vast majority of players demanded it… but at the moment, that’s not the case.
