Information has leaked about Marvel’s Wolverine, the studio’s next game, and it’s about Sony’s as-yet-unannounced console.
A slide from the Marvel’s Wolverine presentation has surfaced on Reddit, leaked in the wake of a ransomware attack on Sony’s studio. It shows technical details and what Insomniac Games is looking at to eventually use these technologies in the game for PlayStation 5. Film-like facial animation, improved destructibility, real-time damage and regeneration, real-time global illumination, dynamic weather and foliage, deformable surfaces…
Nothing surprising there, but then we’re stuck with “machine learning-based upscaling using artificial intelligence” while the performance-focused ray-tracing gameplay runs at 60 FPS. Where’s the trick? There’s no dedicated hardware in the base PlayStation 5 that uses AI-based upscaling, so only the PlayStation 5 Pro is expected to have it. The slide doesn’t refer to AMD FSR, as that technology isn’t powered by machine learning (Nvidia DLSS is, but the console has AMD components).
This isn’t the first time we’ve heard about AI-based scaling of a half-generation model of the PlayStation 5, as another leak mentioned it with dedicated hardware. While the leak may not be completely accurate, given the console’s processor (Zen 2 CPU), it seems plausible, as switching to other chips could make retroactive support difficult, and also the manufacturing costs could increase significantly, and since the PlayStation 5 has not only fallen in price, but INCREASED in price in its lifetime so far, it would also be better for Sony to go with a cheaper solution for the console. (We’re still afraid of how much they’ll charge for the PlayStation 5 Pro! At this rate, it could cost up to $700).
The PlayStation 5 Pro has not been officially announced yet, so this is still just a rumor and should be treated as such.
