Here’s a roundup of what we’ve heard about Sony’s half-generation update, the PlayStation 5 Pro.
In the video embedded below, Moore’s Law is Dead talks about what NXGamer’s Michael reported. According to some unnamed sources, the half-generation hardware update will feature artificial intelligence graphics upscaling, similar to what you get with DLSS on Nvidia graphics cards, for example. This technology has been in development for some time, and with stronger specifications, Sony will advertise the PlayStation 5 Pro as being able to run at 4K resolution with a frame rate of 120 fps.
This doesn’t mean native resolution, but the company doesn’t need to talk about that, as upscaling and image reconstruction are both common technologies these days. Back in 2016, when the PlayStation 4 Pro used checkerboard upscaling, the technology wasn’t as prevalent (and at the time, it was one of the few upscaling options available to consumers). According to Michael, developers will have some work to do to implement AI upscaling, but they won’t have to do much to boost performance, especially when it comes to titles with VRR-enabled 40 FPS modes. Most PlayStation 5 games developed by Sony do, so the company should be prepared.
And Serkan Toto, a well-known analyst, told CNBC that basically everyone in the gaming industry sees the PlayStation 5 Pro coming in the second half of 2024, and that it will fit in well with Grand Theft Auto VI. According to Toto, “it will be a shot in the arm for the entire gaming industry,” meaning that it will suddenly have a positive impact on the industry and encourage it to take on new activities.
The PlayStation 5 Pro is not official yet, and what we have heard is that it will have a Zen 2 based processor to keep the price of the console under control. The AI scaling will be a big innovation (we have never seen anything like it on a console) if the rumors are true.
