Although leaked a day earlier due to Japanese retail listings, the three games from GSC Game World have now been officially announced for consoles. In fact, they’ve already been released!
S.T.A.L.K.E.R.: Legends of the Zone Trilogy has been released for PlayStation 4 and Xbox One. So S.T.A.L.K.E.R.: Shadow of Chernobyl, S.T.A.L.K.E.R.: Clear Sky and S.T.A.L.K.E.R.: Call of Pripyat got a console port. GSC Game World’s work has been brought to Sony and Microsoft consoles by Mataboo (and backwards compatibility means the adventures in the Zone can also be played on PlayStation 5 and Xbox series).
All three games have been optimized for consoles, with a new interface and control scheme, tweaked visuals (all three games launched on PC before PlayStation 4 and Xbox One), an adapted shooting system, and achievements/trophies. Later, mod support will be added via mod.io, so you’ll be able to create mods on PC and install them on consoles. What about the PlayStation 5 and Xbox series? There’s a current-gen patch in the pipeline that will improve graphics and performance on machines released in 2020, but other updates are promised for PlayStation 5/Xbox Series versions (no word on those yet).
Despite the leaks, it’s still a big surprise that S.T.A.L.K.E.R.: Legends of the Zone Trilogy will allow more people to experience the previous stories of the Zone. It’s been a long road, as the first installment of the franchise, S.T.A.L.K.E.R.: Shadow of Chernobyl, was delayed for years before finally being released on PC in early 2007. (Its role as a graphical benchmark was then taken over by Crysis at the end of the year…)
Hopefully the trilogy will be a big hit with console users as well. Especially the mod support is a big plus, as it is a rarity on consoles.
