Bethesda knows players are looking forward to Fallout 5, but they say they “can’t do everything at once.”
It’s clear that the community is hungry for the release of the new instalment of Bethesda’s post-apocalyptic saga, Fallout 5. After all, the success of Prime Video’s Fallout series has shown that gamers want new adventures in the wasteland. However, we have to be realistic about the current situation of Bethesda Game Studios.
The Microsoft-owned studio has its hands full with the development of Starfield and its accompanying add-on, but many of their employees are also working on the highly anticipated The Elder Scrolls 6.
In light of this, there has been a lot of talk about Fallout 5 in recent days. But the game is undoubtedly a long way off. A veteran Bethesda screenwriter has explained why the title is taking so long to come out. Emil Pagliarulo answered a user’s question on X/Twitter: “At the end of the day, though, it always comes down to that most important resource of all – people. As with any dev team, we have talented folks who need time to make great stuff. So we can’t do everything at once,” he says. It should not be forgotten that the Fallout series also led to a resurgence of games on Steam and a surge in the number of players.
The reality is that Fallout 5 isn’t really expected until the 2030s. Todd Howard’s recent statement in an interview with IGN when asked about the next title in the post-apocalyptic RPG saga suggests that the Bethesda boss doesn’t want to give a date. “I’m going to avoid putting dates on anything. I’ve learned that the hard way. So obviously, our focus as far as new development right now is Elder Scrolls VI, but that doesn’t mean that we’re not making plans for other things,” he explains.
What is Bethesda working on if not (yet) Fallout 5?
As previously reported, Bethesda focuses on Starfield and the upcoming “really good updates.” Including the Shattered Space expansion. However, the studio is also working hard on Fallout 76: “We’re still doing a lot of work, obviously on Fallout 76, and we see the community, so many people going into that game and kind of rediscovering it and just so happy with where that game is at. It really does, and I mean, this has one of the best communities in all of gaming.” As for the other big franchise, we recently wrote about where the development of The Elder Scrolls VI is going and when the game is expected to be released.
At the end of the day, though, it always comes down to that most important resource of all – people. As with any dev team, we have talented folks who need time to make great stuff. So we can't do everything at once. Institute scientists are hard at work on cloning initiatives! 😉
