PlayStation 5 Breaks Another Record, But The Outlook Is Still Bleak!

PlayStation 5 breaks sales record but still falls short of target after surpassing 59 million units sold…

In its latest financial earnings report, Sony Interactive Entertainment revealed that it sold 20.8 million PlayStation 5 units in the fiscal year ended March 31. With this, Sony sold more than in any fiscal year since the console was released in November 2020. However, despite this performance, Sony still fell short of its original PS5 sales target for this year. Moreover, with more than 4 million…

Sony originally planned to sell 25 million units for the fiscal year ending March 31, 2024, but they sold 20.8 million units, 4 million fewer, bringing the total to 59 million.

As noted by VideoGamesChronicle , Sony revised the 25 million target to 21 million in February. However, they didn’t achieve this goal either, although it’s true, they barely missed it.

With 59 million units, the PS5 has now approached the PlayStation 4’s record of 60 million units. This was at the same stage of the previous generation console’s lifecycle. However, Tokyo-based video game analyst Serkan Toto told VGC that 20.8 million units sold will likely mark the PS5’s peak.

He added that the number would have been much lower if not for the February release of Helldivers 2, which is PlayStation’s fastest-selling game to date, after selling 12 million copies in 12 weeks.

In the earnings report, Sony told investors that in the fiscal year that has just begun (and will end in March next year), they can expect a decrease in game sales due to the anticipated decline in console sales. According to the company, no major games from the existing franchises will appear until now. However, according to Sony, Firewalk Studios plans to release Concord, a new multiplayer online shooter IP coming to PS5 and PC, later this year.

We recently heard from PlayStation that Hermen Hulst and Hideaki Nishino became the company’s dual CEOs.
