[SGF 2024] Sid Meier’s Civilization VII: An Impossible port in Development [VIDEO]

The next installment of one of the defining IPs of the 4X genre is being made for a platform we find hard to believe it could run locally, but the launch window makes us suspect that the case is not quite what Take-Two (or at least its subsidiary 2K) and Firaxis Games have announced.

The award-winning strategy game franchise returns with a revolutionary new chapter. Sid Meier’s Civilization VII gives you the power to build the greatest empire the world has ever known! Rule as one of many legendary leaders from throughout history. Establish your civilization, build cities and architectural wonders to expand your territory, conquer or cooperate with rival civilizations in pursuit of prosperity, and explore the far reaches of the unknown world. Can you build an empire that will stand the test of time?

Sid Meier’s Civilization VII is a 4X strategy game from the legendary team at Firaxis Games, developers of the Civilization and XCOM franchises. They just announced the game at the Summer Game Fest, so we’ll have to wait until August for a full gameplay reveal, so they’re probably saving it for Gamescom, which usually happens in the last month of summer.

So what is this impossible port? Sid Meier’s Civilization VII will be released in 2025 for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series, PC (Steam), PlayStation 4, Xbox One and Nintendo Switch. The Switch port is what we consider impossible. How are you going to make this game work on that platform? Will it run from the cloud? We rather suspect that the Switch port doesn’t really exist, but is planned for the successor of the Switch, only it can’t be named yet at the request of the big N…

As for the Switch successor, the big N has officially said that it will be announced in the fiscal year starting April 1, but it’s likely to be released by March 2025. The Switch was also released in March 2017, and that period worked out well for it.
