The Japanese company may have made a mistake with one of the components of the yet-to-be-announced hardware (whose name we don’t even know), according to Digital Foundry editors.
During the DF Direct Weekly podcast, fans asked the editors a question about Nintendo’s next-generation console. Rumor has it that the Switch 2 (or whatever it’s called, let’s hope it’s not called the Switch U) will have a 1080p resolution display, and if the console can run Switch games thanks to backwards compatibility, there could still be criticism about image quality.
On the current console, games run at 720p in handheld mode, which can look fuzzy on a 1080p display. For this reason, the Switch 2 should run Switch games in docked mode, since Switch games run at 1080p. The trick is that you’d have to use docked mode in handheld mode, since docking wouldn’t be a problem (you wouldn’t be playing on the handheld’s screen).
Even for new-generation games, a 1080p display can be problematic. Of course, developers can design with 720p resolution, but it wouldn’t look very nice on the display, but this could be helped by Nvidia’s DLSS upscaling technology, as upscaling from 540p to 1080p would look nicer than upscaling from 720p to 1080p. According to Digital Foundry, a 720p display would be more useful for the big N’s new device, as the lower resolution could allow for more performance in handheld mode and still get beautiful visuals (Steam Deck proved this), and let’s not forget HDR support, as that would also be a huge improvement over the Nintendo Switch’s visuals.
Nintendo should have more to say about the hardware coming after the Switch soon. Perhaps the Japanese company will do so in the fall, as the Switch was also unveiled in the fall of 2016 before starting its conquest tour in March 2017. The company has so far only officially said that it will announce the new console by the end of March 2025, but we think the launch will happen before then.
