Returnal’s Devs are Knee-Deep in Their Next Game

Housemarque is looking for a Senior Game Designer for its next AAA action game, and the Finnish team at PlayStation Studios has already started work.

The studio was acquired by Sony Interactive Entertainment in 2021, shortly after the release of Returnal. Their game was released on PC in February last year, and a job ad appeared on LinkedIn. The successful candidate will work closely with a team of artists, programmers, animators and designers to drive the next evolution of Housemarque games. You will be responsible for ensuring the highest quality design and implementation of the game’s enemies, as well as championing the project’s design and creative vision.

You will be responsible for the design, prototyping, and implementation of enemies for a AAA action game from inception to finished, full-fledged opponents for the player to defeat. Your collaboration with the programmers will focus on implementing the behaviors you design. The Level Designers will create the environments for the enemies to ensure that the combat encounters are as exciting, innovative, and creative as possible. They will also work with external developers within the SIE framework, reviewing their work and providing feedback and guidance to ensure their work is in line with the vision of the game. The animators and visual effects artists will receive guidance to ensure that the cues, feedback, and combat animations communicate enemy behavior as clearly as possible to the player.

Expectations include at least one shipped AAA game in a design role, excellent skills and knowledge of level design and enemy design, passion for action games, enemy and boss design, and they will need to be a team player, not only in principle but also in practice. They must believe that communication is the best way to minimize conflict, they should be proficient in using the Unreal Engine (so the game will use Unreal Engine 5), they must be fluent in English, both written and spoken, they must have strong prototyping skills, and they must have the courage to tackle difficult design problems.

We don’t know exactly what it will be, but Housemarque said back in 2022 that they had a new IP in the works, and it might be a multiplayer experience, as that’s what Ilari Kuittinen, the studio’s managing director, might have been referring to back then.
