Amazon’s streaming platform is used by many around the world, so it has become an important platform for people who want to share their world.
Twitch is often in the news when more popular broadcasters are suspended or banned (such as Amouranth, Nickmercs, or Kai Cenat). The platform has also been used by Donald Trump: the former US president used it to broadcast his rallies, but was temporarily banned for a few weeks in 2020 and then indefinitely in 2021 due to the events of January 6, 2021, which took place around the US Capitol. A Twitch spokesperson said at the time that it was a necessary step to maintain the safety and integrity of the community.
But then Trump was allowed back on Amazon. A Twitch spokesperson told PCGamer why the ban was lifted. He pointed out that Trump is now the official presidential nominee of the Republican Party, which played a significant role in the decision. The spokesperson also pointed out that Twitch’s community guidelines apply to all accounts equally, and that there is no exception for these specific accounts. Donald Trump already has more than 143,000 followers, and he’s picking up where he left off a few years ago, broadcasting his campaign rallies on the platform.
But in 2021, it wasn’t just Twitch that banned Trump, as his YouTube channel was similarly suspended, and he was similarly banned from Twitter. (This has since been lifted by the social media’s new owner, Elon Musk.) Over the past four years, broadcasts and streams have grown significantly, making these live broadcasts very effective at reaching audiences. In 2020, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez effectively used the platform to play Among Us with several popular streamers to get them to vote in the 2020 election.
So Trump got his Twitch access back because there could be a repeat of the 2020 election (but who knows if the results will be repeated) because even then Trump was fighting Joe Biden… although Biden’s chair is wobbling badly.
