Leak of DOOM: The Dark Ages at QuakeCon! [VIDEO]

During this year’s QuakeCon, the new DOOM was shown behind closed doors, and viewers were not allowed to record… but that doesn’t mean everyone was quiet about it!

The presentation consisted of a pre-recorded video of the alpha version of the game, narrated by Hugo Martin, the studio’s creative director, mixing cutscenes and gameplay. The snippets shown were an extension of the sequences shown in the announcement video. The game areas will be much more open compared to previous games. id Software confirmed that there will be 3 melee weapons: a flail to collect ammunition, a mace and a fist to create electric chains between opponents.

The saw shield will allow you to traverse the map, but you can also throw it at enemies and then pick it up as it rips through their flesh. Green projectiles can be reflected back at enemies. Verticality no longer plays a major role in the game. When the Doom Slayer jumps, it works much like the force armor mechanic in Fallout 4 or Fallout 76. So you can have slower jumps, and your hero can get stuck in an animation at the beginning, but when he lands, he takes no damage if he falls from higher up, and he can knock enemies off their feet with a shockwave.

The Glory Kill system has been completely overhauled, moving away from programmed finishing moves based on angle of attack. Now, a small purple halo appears on the enemy, indicating that the player can execute that enemy. Depending on the player’s choice, these moves can be based on kicks and punches or any melee weapon. A new weapon was also introduced, which could be some kind of double-barreled plasma weapon. It might resemble the plasma rifle from the first DOOM, but with two barrels connected by a piece of metal. Both guns fire simultaneously. A single barrel shotgun was also introduced.

The nail gun shown in the first trailer, like the other weapons, works perfectly with all of the game’s mechanics: for example, a wall was shown with several enemies nailed to it. The dragon and Altan (the big mech) can be played multiple times in the campaign. Altan fights with his fist and a double cannon. He also has his own HUD. When he takes damage, chunks of his armor break off and he can do a Glory Kill. A few more enemies have been introduced, and the existing ones have been slightly modified. New ones include a strange octobrain that fires blue projectiles and a large four-legged cyberdemon. The Arachnotrons are now more fleshy. The interface is reminiscent of DOOM Eternal, and environmental storytelling seems to play an important role in the game.

None of this is official yet, but it’s all the more exciting!
