A New Steam Feature Was Only Available for a Few Hours! What Happened?

Valve probably only released this feature to the public for testing purposes, but it’s interesting that it was only on Gabe Newell’s popular digital platform for such a short time…

Steam is in a very strong position compared to other PC platforms (GOG, Epic Games Store, Itch.io…), but this requires Valve to keep improving it, as it provides a convenient, sophisticated and fair interface for the millions of gamers who often rate the games they play. This is where the new feature comes in, as it allows you to filter the ratings.

On Reddit and social media, it was revealed that Valve had been testing a helpfulness feature on game store pages. It was hard to figure out what the feature was about because Valve actually turned it off after a few hours. There were the usual options (list by freshness, helpfulness, summary, or humor), along with a checkbox to enable the new feature, and it could be applied next to the summary or most wanted option. Early impressions were that the system was designed to make it more useful to read the full ratings, rather than focusing on positive or negative ratings.

Valve is finally addressing bad reviews issue

The few users who have been able to try it have written that by using the helpfulness system, Steam has only served up longer, more constructive reviews, and filtered out reviews that were meant to be more fun or less helpful. Some commenters have also suggested that Steam uses the system to combat negative carpet-bombing reviews (the most recent being Earth Defense Force 6, which initially failed to address the need for an Epic account).

According to users, Valve’s new system could include a text-analysis algorithm that would determine which user reviews are useful and which are not, based on the text being processed.
