Sony initially said that they would lose a bit of money on the PlayStation 4 when it launched. Six months later, the console is already turning a profit, according to Sony’s Kaz Hirai.
The company is actually making money on each PlayStation 4 console they sell right now, which is a surprisingly quick turnaround into profit. It took Sony over 3 years to make money on every PS3 console they sold. They did the same with the PS4 in just six months.
Sony has been struggling financially lately, posting record losses and cutting or selling some of their businesses. They desperately need the PlayStation 4 to be successful, and so far, the console is a big success. Sony has sold millions of PS4 consoles, and has outsold the Xbox One in all but one month since release.
Hirai added that the PlayStation 4 was actually on track to beat Sony’s “biggest gaming success”, the PS2. The PS2 is one of the best selling games consoles in history, selling 155 million units and over 1.5 billion games. The PS4 so far has “only” sold 7 million units and around 30 million games.
While it’s already a big success, the PlayStation 4 has a long way to go if it’s to match the PS2 in terms of profitability.
