Andrew Wilson, the CEO of Electronic Arts just had a bit of a “coming out”: after several months of serious issues of the worst launch in the history of video games, he admits what everyone knew for a long time already: the Battlefield 4 launch was just shockingly bad.
Of course it wouldn’t be Electronic Arts if Wilson wouldn’t use a more politically correct term: he named the launch “unacceptable”, but we all know that this is actually an understatement — the game was simply unplayable for months after launch, especially on the PlayStation 4, where it crashed all the time.
Wilson admitted the mistake and assured people that the developer DICE has learned from the mistakes made with Battlefield 4, and stated that the solution is “longer development times” with more quality control testing.
Complexity was the main problem according to Wilson and the fact that the game was made for five different platform didn’t made things easier. “We are always pushing the boundaries”, Wilson added, so he couldn’t guarantee that this sort of problems wouldn’t happen again. He also added:
“But when you do things like that you can never guarantee. It would be disingenuous for me to sit here and say, ‘we will never have an issue again,’ because that would mean we were never going to push the boundaries again. And I don’t want to be that company. I want to be a company that pushes to lead and innovate and be creative.”
A new Battlefield game was announced recently for the PlayStation 4: Battlefield Hardline, which is coming this Fall. We’ll see if EA has learned from its lessons with BF4.
