Sony sold 3.3 million PlayStation 4 consoles last quarter

Sony released its quarterly financial results today, where the company revealed that PlayStation 4 sales during the quarter reached 3.3 million units worldwide. Back in August, Sony revealed that PS4 sales were at 10 million units, which would put the total sales now around 12 million. By comparison, Microsoft’s recent quarterly results show that it shipped just 2.4 million Xbox One units during the same period.

The PlayStation 4 led the console division for Sony, which generated over $2.8 billion in revenue for the quarter, making it one of their most important sectors. The revenue represents an 82% increase compared to last year, mainly due to the introduction of the PS4.

On the business side of things, Sony had an operating loss of $700 million, mainly due to the company’s struggling mobile division, which lost $1.5 billion last quarter. Nevertheless, things are a bit better than last quarter.

Sony forecasts better results for the future, where it sees all divisions performing better than last quarter. Especially the gaming division, where Sony has high hopes for this Fall with the very important Holiday shopping season.
