Another long-lived game studio bites the dust. Zombie Studios, the original developer of the Spec Ops games, revealed today with a Douglas Adams reference that they will close after over 20 years in the industry. Surprising? Not really.
The studio’s recent games – the much criticized Daylight, two unexceptional SAW tie-ins, and Blackwater, a shameful on-rails advertisement for the world’s sketchiest Private Military Contractor. Still, regardless of game quality, it’s always a disgrace to see developers lose their jobs.
Still, we have some good news to report as well. While the studio wasn’t really successful with their other games, the free-to-play shooter Blacklight: Retribution has still increased a large fan base with its cool gameplay and striking presentation, so they will support it more. Where exactly?
Most of the Blacklight team has formed a new studio called Builder Box Games, and they plan to continue working with publisher Perfect World Entertainment to put out more frequent updates and many new content. Generally a studio closure would be cause grief, but it seems like Blacklight fans actually have a lot to look forward to now.
