Despite Sony and Microsoft both launching their consoles (PlayStation 4, Xbox One, respectively) just two years ago, there is a big possibility of both companies already planning the next generation and their hardware. The new consoles are both likely to launch in this decade with a much bigger focus on digital distribution of the games.
There are several reasons behind a shorter timeframe for the current generation: both the PS4 and the Xbox One are too weak to have 4K resolution games on a decent framerate – not to mention their outdated hardware by the time 4K gaming will be common on the PC. To be honest, both consoles had somewhat outdated hardware in 2013 already. Sony also unveiled their first 4K smartphone, which means this is the future for the consoles as well.
Both consoles have a potential launch date of 2018 – Grand Theft Auto 6 is likely to drop during this year, too. Who knows what Sony is planning with their exclusive franchises? The PS5 and the XB2 will be likely to use AMD chipsets – this helps cross-platform development, plus it might help the consoles to have backwards compatibility right from the start.
However, these are all rumours, so take these with a grain of salt!
I think it’s impossible. This generation is too young 🙂
