On CES 2016, Sony had a press conference, although they did not take their opportunity to surprise us with the PlayStation VR’s price and release date announcements. It would have made a lot of sense, though – the PSVR’s rival Oculus Rift had its price unveiled just a few days ago (600 US dollars, 700 euros!). However, Sony’s CEO Kaz Hirai seemed to have ignored the topic. Why?
Hirai’s response is logical, although a little awkward: according to him, the PlayStation VR will be a platform mainly for gaming, so it would make more sense to announce anything during E3, the Tokyo Game Show or the Game Development Conference. It’s interesting that he mentioned the TGS as an example – it’s usually held in September, while the PSVR is planned to launch earlier than that (according to the Japanese newspaper Asahi, it’ll be out before June).
Meanwhile, there are a few rumors about the virtual reality headset’s price; it might be priced between 400 and 600 dollars/euros. If this proves to be true, then the PSVR will have the chance to be cheaper than the Rift. However, the „price of a new gaming platform” statement wouldn’t be entirely legitimate.
