PlayStation VR isn’t even launched yet, and there are already problems within Sony. Dr. Dave Ranyard was the leader of Sony’s London studio (he’s been working there for 17 years!), but he decided to leave Sony and work on VR games independently.
Ranyard has worked on several PSVR demos, including one called The London Heist. He’s created other, non-VR-related products like Eyetoy, The Getaway or Singstar.
Ranyard commented the following: „2016 is going to be THE year of VR, so it’s the perfect time for me to take this step into independent development,” he said in a statement. “The emergence of a new medium like VR doesn’t come along very often, and I want to be a part of this new world. It was a tough decision to leave Sony as I have enjoyed my time there, working on some fantastic games and making some lifelong friends. I’m also a huge PlayStation fanboy at heart so am looking forward to working on Sony‘s VR platform in addition to others that will be available.”
Ranyard’s move is risky, and it’s a significant blow to both Sony and the PlayStation VR. The Japanese company lost a key figure of their virtual reality headset team. Rumors say the headset will be out in April. We’ll see about that…
