During the weekend, a hacker group called OurMine used DDoS attacks on the Pokémon Go servers in Europe, Australia, and New Zealand, to point out the lacking security, and they will not stop until the game’s creators contact them.
„Nobody will be able to play the game until Pokémon Go doesn’t contact us on our website to teach them how to protect [themselves]!” – this was posted on their site, and they also announced their plans a few hours before the attacks happened to prove their credibility.
They didn’t attack with bad intentions: they want to show the lack of safety measures. Their recent „victims” include Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg’s, Twitter President Jack Dorsey’s, and Google-boss’ Sundar Pichai’s Twitter accounts. With these attacks, they can promote their solutions, ranging from 30 to 5000 dollars.
Interestingly, PoodleCorp, the team behind the League of Legends and Battle.net attacks, also say that they were DDoS-ing Pokémon Go, and they will repeat it on August 1.
These things come with popularity – perhaps it’s time to improve safety all around the servers and the application…
